Spelling & Vocabulary
Online learning with real tutor support
Spelling and vocabulary work together more closely than they get credit for. A child who knows more words tends to spell more accurately, since spelling patterns become familiar through repeated exposure. A child who spells accurately reads more fluently, since they're not stumbling over unfamiliar letter combinations.
When either one lags behind, it shows up in both directions. Weak vocabulary makes reading comprehension harder, since a text full of unfamiliar words is a text that's hard to follow. Weak spelling makes writing slower and more frustrating, since so much attention goes into getting individual words right that there's less left over for the ideas themselves.
Spelling patterns also build in a predictable sequence, from simple three-letter words through to long vowel patterns, tricky silent letters, and academic vocabulary. A gap anywhere in that sequence tends to make later patterns harder to learn.
Spelling and vocabulary are covered within our full K-12 English tutoring, so your child's personalized plan can build both skills alongside the rest of the curriculum as they progress through school.
When your child gets started with APLUS America, we take time to understand where they're currently at with spelling patterns and vocabulary. If either is an area needing support, their weekly plan will target it directly.
Our spelling and vocabulary curriculum is fully aligned to Common Core Standards and covers every stage from early spelling patterns through to academic vocabulary and word origins.

We start by getting a clear picture of your child's current spelling accuracy and vocabulary. This helps us understand exactly where support is needed.
Every Monday, your child's personalized learning plan is updated with new activities targeting the spelling and vocabulary skills they need most. Lessons are delivered through English Wiz, our online learning platform.
Your child's lessons are short and interactive, introducing spelling patterns and new words in context with plenty of practice and instant feedback.
Spelling patterns and new vocabulary stick best when they're introduced in small groups with plenty of repetition, not memorized from a list the night before a test. That's why our lessons build both gradually, in context, with real words your child will actually use in their reading and writing.
From there, your child gets a personalized learning plan that targets the specific patterns and words they need, at their own pace, with support available when they need it.
Students who build solid spelling accuracy and a wide vocabulary find both reading and writing noticeably more manageable, since less effort goes into decoding individual words and more goes into understanding and expressing ideas. Students who don't tend to carry that gap forward into every subject that involves reading or writing, which is nearly all of them.
Spelling and vocabulary also matter for standardized assessments. The reading and writing sections of tests like the SAT and ACT draw on vocabulary knowledge directly, and spelling accuracy is scored as part of every written response on state assessments. We don't specifically prepare students for those tests, but a student with genuinely strong spelling and vocabulary is in a much stronger position when they sit one.

Yes, this is a common and specific gap. Reading and spelling draw on related but different skills, and their learning plan will focus directly on spelling patterns rather than assuming reading strength means spelling will follow.

Not directly, we're curriculum-based tutoring, not a test prep service. But vocabulary is directly tested on the SAT and ACT, and spelling accuracy is scored in every written response on state assessments, so a student who has genuinely built these skills tends to be better positioned going in.
