Phonics & Early Reading
Online learning with real tutor support
Learning to read starts with connecting letters to sounds, blending those sounds into words, and building enough fluency to read without stopping to sound out every word. When that early decoding work is solid, everything that comes after it, spelling, vocabulary, comprehension, tends to fall into place more easily.
When it isn't solid, the effects show up later and can be hard to trace back. A child who still hesitates over unfamiliar words in Grade 3 or 4 often isn't struggling with comprehension itself. They're struggling with decoding, and that's quietly making comprehension harder too.
This is also a moment of real momentum nationally. Schools across the country are shifting toward explicit, systematic phonics instruction, often described as the Science of Reading, because the evidence for it is strong. We build our early reading lessons the same way: structured, sequential, and focused on the actual skill of decoding rather than guessing from pictures or context.
The earlier a phonics gap is found and closed, the easier everything after it becomes.
Phonics and early reading are covered within our full K-12 English tutoring, so your child's personalized plan can build decoding skills alongside the rest of the curriculum as they grow.
When your child gets started with APLUS America, we take time to understand where they're currently at with letter sounds, blending, and early reading. If phonics is an area that needs support, whether your child is in Kindergarten just starting out, or older and still working through earlier gaps, their weekly plan will target it directly.
Our phonics curriculum is fully aligned to Common Core Standards and covers the full sequence from a child's first letter sounds through to confident, independent reading.
First grade is an important time for building strong reading and English foundations. Children begin developing the skills that support more confident reading, writing and comprehension as they move through school.

Decoding becomes more complex, and reading starts to lean more on comprehension. Children with earlier gaps often still hesitate here. Topics covered include:
Phonics is no longer explicitly taught in most classrooms by this stage, but a shaky foundation still shows up. For older children who need to go back and fill in earlier decoding gaps, we work through exactly what's missing, however far back that goes, and rebuild from there.
We start by getting a clear picture of your child's current letter sound knowledge, blending ability, and reading fluency. This helps us understand exactly where support is needed.
Every Monday, your child's personalized learning plan is updated with new activities targeting the areas that need support. Lessons are delivered through English Wiz, our online learning platform.
Your child's lessons are short and interactive, using pictures, audio, and text to break each concept into clear steps, with instant feedback built in.
Phonics can feel discouraging when a child keeps hitting the same wall. That's why APLUS America starts by finding out exactly where the breakdown is happening, rather than assuming it's a comprehension problem when it's really a decoding one.
From there, your child gets a personalized learning plan that targets that specific gap, with short, structured lessons they can work through at their own pace. And if they need extra help, our tutors are there to explain things another way.
Children who build solid decoding skills early tend to find spelling, vocabulary, and comprehension noticeably more manageable later on. Children who don't tend to carry that gap forward, where it quietly makes every new reading task harder than it should be.
Strong early reading skills also matter for state reading assessments, which increasingly test decoding and foundational literacy directly, not just comprehension. We don't specifically prepare students for those tests, but a child who can genuinely decode text is in a much stronger position when they sit one. Real skill is what carries over.
Phonics and early reading are included in the full APLUS America English curriculum. There is no separate phonics package. English tutoring starts from $24 per week, which covers the full K-12 curriculum, a personalized weekly lesson plan, tutor support, and weekly progress reports. New families get the first two weeks free.
Our phonics and early reading content runs from Kindergarten through the early elementary grades, and is part of our full K-12 English curriculum, which continues into comprehension, grammar, and writing as your child progresses.
No. Phonics is covered as part of our full K-12 English tutoring. When your child joins, we look at where they're at across reading, writing, and language skills, and the personalized weekly plan works through phonics alongside anything else that needs attention.
Not at all. We identify exactly where the gap began, whether that's a specific letter sound, blend, or sight word set from Kindergarten or Grade 1, and their learning plan addresses it from that point, whatever their current grade level.
Yes. Our full English curriculum, including all phonics content, is aligned to Common Core Standards.
Not directly, we're curriculum-based tutoring, not a test prep service. But state reading assessments increasingly test decoding and foundational literacy skills, and a child who has genuinely built those skills tends to be better positioned going in.
Our phonics lessons are built around explicit, systematic, sequential instruction, the same principles behind the Science of Reading movement. We're not a specialist dyslexia or Orton-Gillingham provider, so if your child has a diagnosed reading disability, that kind of specialist support may be worth exploring alongside our tutoring.
Yes. APLUS America can support children with ADHD, dyslexia, and other learning differences by keeping lessons clear, structured, and manageable. Lessons are short, and everything can be completed at home without classroom pressure. If your child needs extra support, our tutors are there to explain things another way. Your child does not need a formal diagnosis to get started.
