Reading Comprehension Runs Through Every Grade, and Every Subject

Reading comprehension develops gradually as your child moves through school. In Grade 1, that might mean answering a simple question about a story. By Grade 12, it can mean analyzing unfamiliar texts, making inferences and explaining ideas in detail.

And comprehension matters well beyond English. Your child also needs to understand written information in math word problems, science texts, social studies and many other subjects.

Sometimes, difficulties only become noticeable when the reading becomes more complex.

A child may have understood shorter, simpler texts in the early grades, then begin to struggle when passages become longer or questions ask them to work out information that is not directly stated.

When this happens, there can be an earlier skill that needs more support, such as reading fluency, vocabulary or making inferences. Identifying those gaps can help your child strengthen the skills they need for the work they are doing now and as they move into higher grades.

Reading Comprehension Is Covered as Part of Our Full K-12 English Curriculum

Reading comprehension is covered within our full K-12 English tutoring, so your child's personalized plan can build comprehension skills alongside the rest of the curriculum as they progress through school.

When your child gets started with APLUS America, we take time to understand where they're currently at with reading comprehension. If that's an area needing support, their weekly plan will target it directly, whatever grade they're in.

How Our Tutoring Works

Step 1: Understanding your child's level

We start by getting a clear picture of your child's current comprehension skills, including reading fluency, vocabulary, and inference. This helps us understand exactly where support is needed.

Step 2: A weekly lesson plan built around your child

Every Monday, your child's personalized learning plan is updated with new activities targeting the comprehension skills they need most. Lessons are delivered through English Wiz, our online learning platform.

Step 3: Self-paced learning

Your child's lessons are short and interactive, working through a range of text types with instant feedback built in, so they build genuine understanding rather than just guessing at answers.

Why This Approach Works Well for Comprehension

Comprehension gaps are often hard to pin down, since they don't always look like a reading problem on the surface. That's why APLUS America starts by finding out exactly what's underneath the difficulty, whether that's fluency, vocabulary, or inference.

From there, your child gets a personalized learning plan that works through a genuine range of texts, at their own pace, with support available when they need it.

Strong Comprehension Makes Every Other Subject Easier

Children who build genuine comprehension skills tend to find every other subject more manageable, since reading well is what unlocks everything else. Children who don't tend to carry that gap forward, where it shows up in science, social studies, and math word problems as much as it does in English class.

Strong comprehension also matters for standardized assessments. The reading sections of tests like the SAT, ACT, and state assessments draw heavily on comprehension and inference skills. We don't specifically prepare students for those tests, but a student who genuinely understands what they read is in a much stronger position when they sit one.

Frequently Asked Questions

What grades does your reading comprehension curriculum cover?

Our comprehension content runs from Kindergarten through Grade 12, and is part of our full K-12 English curriculum, which also covers phonics, grammar, spelling, and writing.

Is reading comprehension tutoring available as a standalone service?

No. Comprehension is covered as part of our full K-12 English tutoring. When your child joins, we look at where they're at across reading, writing, and language skills, and the personalized weekly plan works through comprehension alongside anything else that needs attention.

My child can read the words fine but doesn't understand what they've read. Can you help?

Yes, this is a common and specific gap. Reading the words accurately and understanding what they mean are different skills. Their learning plan will focus directly on comprehension and inference, not just reading fluency.

Is the curriculum aligned to Common Core Standards?

Yes. Our full English curriculum, including all reading comprehension content, is aligned to Common Core Standards.

Will this help with state reading assessments?

Not directly, we're curriculum-based tutoring, not a test prep service. But state assessments and standardized tests like the SAT and ACT draw heavily on comprehension skills, and a student who has genuinely built those skills tends to be better positioned going in.

Does the comprehension curriculum work for children with ADHD or learning differences?

Yes. APLUS America can support children with ADHD, dyslexia, and other learning differences by keeping lessons clear, structured, and manageable, with support available whenever it's needed. Your child does not need a formal diagnosis to get started.
