What Is the SAT?

The SAT is a standardized college admissions test administered by the College Board, used by colleges and universities across the United States as part of their admissions process. It tests reading, writing and math, with total scores reported on a 400 to 1600 scale. The math section is scored separately on a 200 to 800 scale.

Since 2024 the SAT has been fully digital, delivered through the College Board's Bluebook app. The digital SAT is adaptive, meaning the difficulty of the second module of questions adjusts based on how a student performed in the first.

2026-2027 SAT Test Dates

The SAT is offered eight times per year in the United States. The confirmed 2026-2027 weekend dates are August 22, September 12, October 3, November 7 and December 5, 2026, followed by March 6, May 1 and June 5, 2027.

Registration is open for all fall 2026 dates now. Students register through their College Board account at collegeboard.org. Registration typically closes around three weeks before each test date, with a late registration period after that for an additional $38 fee.

The standard registration fee is $68. Fee waivers are available for eligible students with financial need through their school counselor.

What Does the SAT Math Section Test?

The SAT math section consists of 44 questions answered in 70 minutes, split across two modules. A calculator is permitted throughout. The questions fall into four content domains:

Algebra (approximately 35% of the math section): Linear equations and inequalities, systems of equations, linear functions and their graphs. This is the largest single domain and draws directly on Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 skills.
Advanced Math (approximately 35%): Quadratic and exponential equations, polynomial functions, rational expressions, radicals and function notation. This content draws on Algebra 2 and Pre-Calculus foundations.
Problem Solving and Data Analysis (approximately 15%): Ratios, percentages, proportions, statistics, probability and interpreting data from tables and graphs. Real-world applications of mathematical reasoning.
Geometry and Trigonometry (approximately 15%): Area, perimeter, volume, the Pythagorean theorem, coordinate geometry, circles and basic trigonometric ratios. Draws on Geometry and introductory trigonometry.

What math is on the SAT?

The digital SAT math section tests four domains: algebra, advanced math (quadratic and polynomial functions), problem solving and data analysis, and geometry and trigonometry. Algebra and advanced math together make up around 70% of the math section.

Does APLUS America offer SAT practice papers or mock tests?

No. We are curriculum-based tutoring, not a test prep service. We build the foundational math skills that the SAT tests. For timed practice papers and test-taking strategy, your child's school or a dedicated SAT prep provider would be better placed to help.

My child is in Grade 10. Is it too early to think about SAT math preparation?

Grade 10 is actually a good time to start. Students who are solid in algebra and moving into geometry and Algebra 2 are building exactly the skills the SAT math section tests most heavily. Working through those subjects with a personalized plan builds genuine understanding over time rather than cramming before the test.

Can APLUS America help with both the SAT and high school math generally?
