Algebra Is Where a Lot of Students Start to Struggle

For many kids, math feels manageable until algebra arrives. Numbers are replaced by letters. Problems stop having obvious answers. And for the first time, a single concept they didn't quite grasp in one week can quietly derail the next month of lessons.

That's not a sign that a child isn't capable. It's a sign that something didn't click, and nobody caught it in time.

Algebra builds on itself more than almost any other subject. Shaky pre-algebra foundations make Algebra 1 harder. Gaps in Algebra 1 make Algebra 2 feel impossible. And by the time a student reaches Pre-Calculus or Geometry, those early algebra gaps are still there, showing up in every new topic.

The earlier those gaps get found and filled, the better. That's exactly what our math curriculum is designed to do.

Algebra Is Covered as Part of Our Full K-12 Math Curriculum

Algebra is covered within our full K-12 math tutoring, so your child's personalized plan can cover algebra alongside the other math concepts in the curriculum.

When your child gets started with APLUS America, they complete our Math Doctor assessment. This helps identify what they already understand, where they may be getting stuck, and which skills need more support.

If those areas include algebra, their weekly plan will target algebra. As those gaps close, their personalized learning plan continues developing the next skills they need.

What We Cover Across Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1 and Algebra 2

Our algebra curriculum is fully aligned to Common Core Standards and covers every stage from a student's first introduction to variables all the way through to advanced Algebra 2 topics.

Pre-Algebra (Grades 6-8)

Pre-algebra is where the foundations are built. Students who get this right find Algebra 1 significantly less intimidating. Topics covered include:

Algebra 1 (Grades 8-9)

Algebra 1 is the gateway to all high school math. A strong foundation here directly affects how a student performs in Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus and beyond. Topics covered include:

Algebra 2 (Grades 10-11)

Algebra 2 takes the concepts from Algebra 1 further into complex numbers, polynomial functions, logarithms and trigonometric functions. Students who have gaps from Algebra 1 tend to feel it most at this stage. Topics covered include:

How Our Tutoring Works

Step 1: Math Doctor Assessment

Every student starts here. The Math Doctor diagnostic assessment identifies exactly which math concepts your child understands and where the gaps are, including in algebra. This is what makes the personalized plan possible.

Step 2: A Weekly Lesson Plan Built Around Your Child

Every Monday, your child's personalized learning plan is updated with new lessons targeting the areas that need support, including algebra. The lessons are delivered through Math Wiz, our online learning platform, so your child can keep building their skills with the right support each week.

Step 3: Self-Paced Learning

Your child's personalized lesson plan is delivered weekly and can be completed at home on a tablet or computer. It updates each Monday and adapts as they progress, helping keep learning at the right level. Your child can work through each lesson at their own pace, with support available when they need it.

Step 4: Tutor Support When They Need It

If your child needs extra support with algebra or another area of math, our online tutors are there to explain concepts further and answer questions, so your child can continue with confidence.

Why This Approach Works Well for Algebra

Algebra can feel overwhelming when a child's math foundations aren't strong yet. That's why APLUS America starts by finding out what your child already understands and where they need more support.

From there, your child receives a personalized learning plan that can target algebra alongside the other math skills that support it. They can complete their lessons at home, at their own pace, with the plan adapting as they progress.

And if they need extra help with algebra or another area of math, our online tutors are there to explain concepts further and answer questions, so your child can keep moving forward with confidence.

Algebra Now Makes Everything Else Easier Later

Students who get algebra right find Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Trigonometry and Calculus noticeably more manageable. Students who don't tend to carry those gaps forward, making each new subject feel harder than the last.

If your child is in middle school and starting to find math difficult, addressing algebra now makes high school much less stressful. If they're already in high school and struggling, getting the algebra foundations right will show up across all of their math subjects, not just the algebra class.

Strong algebra skills also matter when it comes to standardized assessments. The math sections of tests like the SAT, ACT and state assessments such as STAAR draw heavily on algebra concepts: linear equations, functions, quadratics and interpreting graphs. We don't specifically prepare students for those tests, but a student who genuinely understands algebra is in a much stronger position when they sit one. Building real understanding is the point, and that understanding transfers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What grades does your algebra curriculum cover?

Our algebra curriculum runs from Grade 6 through to Grade 12, covering Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1 and Algebra 2. It is part of our full K-12 math tutoring, which also covers everything from early number sense through to Pre-Calculus, Statistics and AP Calculus.

Is algebra tutoring available as a standalone service?

No. Algebra is covered as part of our full K-12 math tutoring. When your child joins, the Math Doctor assessment identifies where they are across the whole math curriculum, and the personalized weekly plan works through algebra alongside any other areas that need attention.

My child is really struggling with Algebra 1. Will the tutoring go back and fill in the gaps?

Yes. The Math Doctor assessment is designed to find exactly this. If your child's Algebra 1 difficulties trace back to something that wasn't fully understood in pre-algebra or earlier, the plan will address that first. Building on solid foundations is faster than pushing forward on shaky ones.

How does the tutor support work for algebra questions?

Your child can call our tutor line any time during support hours, Monday to Thursday after school, up to 10 hours per week. If they are stuck on an algebra problem or concept, a tutor will work through it with them using screen sharing and an interactive whiteboard. This is included in the weekly fee.

Is the curriculum aligned to Common Core Standards?

Yes. Our full math curriculum, including all algebra content, is aligned to Common Core Standards.

Will algebra tutoring help my child with standardized tests like the SAT or state assessments?

Not directly, we are curriculum-based tutoring, not a test prep service. But the algebra skills your child builds through APLUS America can support them in the math sections of the SAT, ACT and state assessments like STAAR. When a student genuinely understands algebra, rather than just memorizing steps, they're often better prepared to approach those assessments with confidence. The foundation is the same.

What comes after Algebra 2 in the curriculum?

After Algebra 2, the curriculum covers Pre-Calculus and Trigonometry, followed by AP Calculus and Probability and Statistics. The personalized plan moves with your child as they progress through high school math.

Does the algebra curriculum work for students with ADHD or learning differences?

Yes. APLUS America can support students with ADHD, dyscalculia, and other learning differences by keeping algebra lessons clear, structured, and manageable. Our algebra curriculum breaks each concept down step by step, while your child's personalized weekly learning plan follows a predictable rhythm. Lessons are short, and everything can be completed at home without classroom pressure. If a concept needs more time, it gets more time. If your child needs extra support, our online tutors are there to explain algebra concepts in another way and answer questions. Your child does not need a formal diagnosis to access our tutoring.
